Game jam is an event for those people who have passions in creating games, come together, and group themselves to make incredible games in a short period of time. And IGDA’s Global Game Jam is the largest Game Jam in the World! It is an annual event worldwide.
In the Philippines, Global Game Jam 2011 (GGJ) was held at the University of the Philippines, Diliman last January 28-30, 2011 same date and time in other countries because it was an event globally. It was the second IGDA’s GGJ event in the Philippines. The theme was “EXTINCTION” (the end of an organism or of a group of organisms, normally a species). I was one of the participants for this exciting event. My group team was “The Easy A” because our names were all started in the letter A except for Guillard, our only torn, anyway his last name started in letter A. ^__^
We created two games entitled “Pixtinction” and the other was “E(arth)xTinction“. Pixtinction is a pc game created using Java.
ShortIntroduction: Being the unluckiest last man on earth, use your wits to survive in a mysterious, hostile environment.
Platform/System: Windows / Mac OS X+ / Linux / Unix
Brief Play Description: The player is shown only a portion of the picture of the mysterious, hostile environment. Based on that, he must choose the tools to survive that environment.
The E(arth)xTinction is also a pc game using wiimote and also created using Java. ShortIntroduction: Save the earth from asteroids– using a wiimote. Remember, there are no second chances. So good luck! Platform/System: Windows. Brief Play Description: Using the Wii remote as controller, the player must be able to save the planet earth by repelling ALL asteroids that fall to it. One asteroid hit and the earth along with all of the human race becomes extinct. Tilt the wii remote left and right to move the shield.
I’ve met talented people and had a great experience developing games. I learned a lot from these people and they really inspired me to keep up and don’t stop learning new things. Life is beautiful and too short so keep exploring your life, take the challenge and make your dreams happen. At the end of the event, before we go home, we planned to start preparing ourselves for the next Global Game Jam! See you guys again. Oops by the way our award was “Most Likely to Use an Aerosmith Soundtrack”… Yeahhh cool!!! ^^,v
